We're being told that both Mom & Patrice will be discharged today! Mom says part of her feels like a baby bird being pushed out of the nest (it's very comforting to have so many experts overseeing her care), but she and Dad are also ready to move on to the next phase. They'll be staying at a hotel for the next three weeks so they can be close for appointments, tri-weekly labs, and for any complications that could come up.
In order to prevent rejection, Mom's immune system has been repressed and will remain repressed to some degree for the rest of her life. This means she's more likely to pick up bugs, and less able to fight them off, which calls for some changes in her diet (no raw eggs, restaurant salad bars, sprouts, raw nuts, unwashed produce . . . ever again. They're also recommending a Mediterranean diet.) and lifestyle (no sick people around her at home or in public, everyone who enters the house washes or sanitizes their hands, vigilant food prep precautions).
She also has to avoid sweets, but fortunately that's a temporary requirement!
We'll be installing a hand sanitizer dispenser by the back door at Mom & Dad's house, so if you ever drop by, be sure to use that or wash your hands thoroughly as soon as you walk in, and please come another day if you're not feeling well.
We'll see, as the day goes on, if they really do get to move out today, but we'll keep you posted!
